The taxonomic significance of fermentative versus oxidative metabolism of carbohydrates by various gram negative bacteria.

چکیده
For many years bacteriologists have observed that some bacteria produce acid from carbohydrates only under aerobic conditions while others produce acid both under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The significance of these observations does not seem to have been appreciated generally by taxonomists. Studies of bacterial physiology have made it increasingly evident that the bacterial metabolism of carbohydrates may be accomplished by two apparently fundamentally different mechanisms (see for example Porter, 1946; Werkman and Wilson, 1951). By one mechanism, appropriately called fermentation, the glucose molecule first is phosphorylated and then split into two triose molecules which undergo further changes. This process is independent of oxygen. By the other mechanism, which we shall call oxidation, the glucose molecule is not split into two triose molecules, but the aldehyde group is oxidized to a carboxyl group forming gluconic acid. Further oxidation may take place to form various products such as 2-ketogluconic acid. Several studies of this mechanism, summarized by Sebek and Randles (1952), have failed to detect phosphorylation of the glucose molecule preliminary to oxidation. In the absence of compounds such as nitrates, the oxidation of carbohydrates is a strictly aerobic process, whereas fermentation is an anaerobic process.

One-tube test for determining oxidative or fermentative metabolism of bacteria.
A one-tube test for distinguishing oxidation from fermentation in the metabolism of carbohydrates was examined on 1,200 gram-negative bacilli. There was a 100% correlation between the one-tube method and the standard two-tube procedure.
متن کاملDetection of Metallo-Beta-lactamase Production in Rare Carbapenem-Resistant Non-fermentative Gram-Negative Bacilli Isolated in a Tertiary Care Hospital, Visakhapatnam, India
Introduction: Non-fermentative Gram-negative bacilli (NFGNB) are occasionally involved in infectious diseases pathology, but have shown resistance to multiple antibiotics and the capability to gain new resistance factors in the hospital environment. The present study was aimed to investigate the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of rare NFGNB isolated from different clinical samples and the pre...

متن کاملIsolation and characterization of Lactobacillus species from intestinal contents of beluga (Huso huso) and Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus)
Lactic acid bacteria are characterized as gram-positive, usually non-motile, non-sporulating bacteria that produce lactic acid as a major or sole product of their fermentative metabolism. In this study, the presence of lactobacilli were investigated in the intestines of beluga ( Huso huso) and Persian sturgeon ( Acipenser persicus ), inhabiting Caspian sea. The obtained data showed that various...
متن کاملEmergence of Imipenem Resistance and Presence of Metallo--Lactamases Enzymes in Multi Drug Resistant Gram Negative Bacilli Isolated from Clinical Samples in Kerman, 2007-2008
Background & Aims: Imipenem is a member of Carbapenem with stability against most -lactamases .It is of particular use in the treatment of infections associated with drug resistant gram negative bacteria harboring ESBL and AmpC genes. The aim of this study was to determine the imipenem resistance in gram negative bacteria causing nosocomial infections and the presence of metallo--lactamases (MB...
